The Doorway—0.7 Seconds Devouring the Red

0.7 seconds before her husband returns, she erases her lipstick—an illicit thrill sharpening with every trace she wipes away.

In the 0.7 seconds it takes the doorknob to turn, she swallows the scarlet hidden between her lips.

First Erasure

Ara switches off the living-room light and draws the curtains. Four minutes since Min-su left for work. Her fingertips tremble. A tissue, like a scrap of Matrix code, presses against her lips. Sixth sheet. The first took the gloss, the second the pigment residue, the third the living red, the fourth and fifth only shadows, and the sixth—

“This… isn’t right.”

A single hidden fleck blooms outward. As the crimson spreads, her breath mingles with it. The tissues in the bin grow damp, like the jealous fingers of a possessive man.

A Seventeen-Minute Scarlet Lie

Seventeen minutes before Min-su returns. Ara sits on the edge of the bed and closes her eyes. A moment later she draws a new red from the back of the drawer. Seventeen minutes—her permit for lethal color. She flicks her tongue across the painted lips. The taste is almond mixed with iron. Guilt or liberation?

The door opens. Min-su’s gaze skims her mouth—or pretends to. While his fingertip glides, he checks for the faintest remaining scarlet. His eyes search for tissues.

“Wipe it off now.”

Not quite a command, yet she rises. In the bathroom she closes the door. Min-su watches her silhouette from the hallway: the line behind her knees, and beneath it the hidden red.

The Secret Inside the Drawer

After Min-su is asleep, Ara opens the drawer under the bed. Discarded lipsticks are piled inside. Their sticky crimson has dried like old blood. She drops today’s tissues into a plastic bag, then quietly opens the refrigerator. She pours red wine into a glass. One sip stains her lips. Her tongue smarts; the alcohol crackles. She inhales deeply.

Yujin’s Forty-Five Seconds

Yujin erases everything in forty-five seconds. When Min-su barges in, she hasn’t yet hidden the lingering red.

“What the hell is this?”

He grips her lip, rubs the color with his thumb. Yujin closes her eyes. His fingers travel from lip to throat.

“Who did you meet?”

She shakes her head. He presses a finger to her mouth; crimson stains the tip. Min-su sighs.

“Is it that you hate me?”

She opens her eyes. Is the flare in his gaze anger or desire? Yujin gives a small nod. Min-su kisses her; the red smears between their lips.

Hidden Camera

After Min-su is asleep, Ara unlocks his phone. The lock screen shows a close-up of a female colleague’s face. Her red lipstick is vivid. Ara studies the photo for a long time.

The next morning, the instant Min-su leaves for work, Ara applies a gloss. Before the mirror she parts her lips slightly; a sleek scarlet coats them.

Yujin’s Log

7 June – Min-su came in suddenly. Erased everything in 45 seconds. Trembling lasted 13 minutes.

15 June – He finally asked. “Who did you meet?” Said no. He pretended to believe, but his eyes were icy.

20 June – Wiped it off, then put it right back on. He asked, I stayed silent. Anger. Why? Do you hate me? I said no, useless. That night I threw everything from the vanity into the trash.

At the Door

Ara stands at the door. Min-su is coming home. She erases her lipstick. A tissue presses against her lips. With every vanishing trace of red, her breath falters.

0.7 seconds for the doorknob to turn. She swallows the scarlet hidden between her lips.

“Honey, I’m home.”

Min-su checks her mouth. No red. He nods. Ara smiles and kisses his cheek. But the tip of her tongue still holds a secret scarlet—clandestine flavor, clandestine guilt.

Hidden Desire

After Min-su is asleep, Ara opens the drawer under the bed. Discarded lipsticks are piled inside, their sticky crimson dried like old blood. She pulls out a tissue and presses it to her lips. Each time the red disappears, she holds her breath. In the hours without Min-su, she paints her lips scarlet again.
